“The boats, engines and all of the supplies have been purchased and are in the warehouse in Port-au-Prince. It is of the utmost importance that we deliver them to the fishermen as soon as possible. Wahoo season starts in September, but peaks between the months of November and February. During that time, the fishermen will be able to generate enough income to provide for their families for the next year,” says Bernard Chauvet, Food For The Poor’s Fishing Village Coordinator in Haiti.
Dear Friend,
You may have been directed to this website because you are fundraising for this project through your church, or have a friend or loved one that is involved. As you may know, this project has been a labor of love. For over a year, we have been raising funds for a fishing village in Pikmi on the island of La Gonave, Haiti. The need there is tremendous. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere where ONE out of every EIGHT children dies before the age of five of a disease that is directly related to malnutrition. But life on La Gonave is far worse than on the mainland. Accessible only by a two-hour boat ride, the island is isolated and many are left to die because they are trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty. Those that have the skills, turn to the ocean for food. However, without proper boats, tools, and training, the fishermen cannot go into the deeper waters where the larger fish are located. Instead, they have to remain close to the coast and cast their nets in areas that are already over fished.
The Solution:
The solution to this problem is planting a Food For The Poor Fishing Village. With 24 active Fishing Villages on the mainland, Pikmi will be the beneficiary of the very first Fishing Village on the island. Our Fishing Village Coordinator, Bernard Chauvet, has already conducted a careful screening and investigative process and has given us the ‘green light’ to move forward with this project. However, as of August 26, 2009, we have only collected $22,177.53, which is a tremendous blessing, but far from the $60,000 needed to purchase:
-4 fiberglass boats
-4 engines (40-HP 25” Shaft Outboard)
-1 Gear Shed (for equipment storage)
-GPS
-2 solar panel streetlights
-1 artesian water well
-1 sanitation block
-Miscellaneous: Hand-held radios; Freezers; Coolers; Lanterns; Safety gear (first aid kits, flare kits, life jackets, etc.); Fishing tackle (anchors, lures, scalers, reels, hooks fishing lines, barrels, buoys, etc.).
Your help is critical:
In a meeting with Bernard, I was informed that all of the equipment is waiting to be delivered to the fishermen, but we cannot do so until the project is funded. With a goal of $60,000, we desperately need your help. Would you prayerfully consider teaming with us on this project? I know that the Lord will provide and that we will have the boats in the hands of the fishermen by November, but we cannot do that without your help. Please help us make a difference TODAY in the lives of those less fortunate.
Thank you and God bless,
