Bring beauty from ashes
Rejected and alone is how many people feel in Lahatte, Haiti. They feel rejected because of the deplorable and unimaginable living conditions they live in. They feel alone because they have no one to help them. Located in a very dry and arid village in Haiti with a population of 1,500 to 3,000 people. Most Haitians live in deplorable conditions and employment opportunities are extremely low. Many families do not have access to food, potable water, or housing. Dilapidated shacks made of mud, clay and other found or discarded items are used to build decrepit hovels they call home. Due to the unstable nature of the shacks, strong winds, rains and hurricanes easily destroy their only means of protection against the elements. Children and the elderly are highly susceptible to long-term illness due to the unsanitary environment and appalling conditions. These families are subject to continue a never ending cycle of poverty without hope for change, unless they receive the support, resources, and knowledge to escape from their substandard living conditions.
Food for the Poor believes adequate housing and proper sanitation are a basic human right and that people deserve a decent place to live and a healthy environment. The Lahatte Community Development Project will provide 15 destitute families with a sturdy home, sanitation units, and a community center for all residents. These new homes will protect these families and give them dignity; and a better quality of life. To address the need of large Haitian families (5-8 members) two units are joined to provide a double unit structure. Sanitation blocks (pit and shower stall)will provide an effective means for the disposal of waste, privacy, and prevent contamination to the community. A community center will provide a central venue where residents can gather for health initiatives, worship, and programs that will improve the community as a whole.
Your gift you will give hope to the hopeless, and provide peace and safety that has never be available to these destitute families. Above all you will demonstrate the love of Jesus who reached out and saw the needs of others and gave of Himself. Help today so that Lahatte can have a better tomorrow!
