Let's Build a Village Together!
For the past eight years, I have been privileged to work for Food For The Poor as a project manager for Dominican Republic, Honduras, Guyana and El Salvador. During that time, I have experienced some amazing things and seen how people's lives can be changed when a helping hand is extended to them. I have been in many dilapidated, broken down shacks made up of materials we normally throw away...and these serve as the homes for families. I don't have the heart to call them "homes" but I realize to these poor families, this is all they have afford to live in. You can look at the photos and decide for yourself if this is indeed a home. I have heard the stories of children and have seen many weeping mothers. Through it all, they maintain a faith that is unsurpassed.
My hope is that I can now raise enough money to build a village in one of these countries, where the need for housing is so great. $130,000 to be exact. Enough to build twenty-five double unit houses for the poorest of the poor. I know it seems like a lot of money, especially in these trying times. But just look at it this way: it's about 24,000 people giving $5.50 each (hey how many people are there on Facebook and Myspace, etc? Or maybe half if people simply gave a donation of $11.00 ... a lot less than we normally spend for a night at the movies! I think together we can do it...and I'm hoping to do it by Christmas!
So give up a movie, or few cups of coffee...and with that you and your friends will help us build a village. And, while you're at it, suggest a name for the village! We'll have a vote at end and between all of us we can decide what this new village will be called! Please consider a gift of $5.50 or $11.00 -- or give more if you'd like! 25 families will be forever grateful to you! -- Liony Batista
