Little Children of Jesus

Of the many miracles Jesus performed I believe that he was most emotionally touched and moved by those who could not take care of themselves, because of physical or mental reasons. These people included the blind, deaf, mute, crippled, deformed, and those who were believed to be possessed by demons. These were people who by no fault of their own became outcasts, beggars, and looked down on by society of the times. They were shunned as not only having no worth, but also for not contributing to society.

Just as Christ said, “The poor will always be with you,” so will be the sick and those who cannot care for themselves. Some of these children have been abandoned or dropped off because of their physical or mental conditions. These children can not care for themselves. The children would simply die if the Little Children of Jesus (Handicapped Children’s Home) did not take in and care for those children who have either been abandoned or who have been left to die in dumps. Yes some, of these children have been found in piles of garbage and in dumps. I remember the story of one girl who was abandoned in a dump and had her hand chewed off by a pig until someone heard her crying, rescued her, and she is now safe and being cared for.

I have visited the Little Children of Jesus Village (Handicapped Children’s Home) twice and found it over crowded, cramped, barely making ends meet from day to day, and understaffed for the amount of children and adults in the home. But, what I have also found is a community of people who give their hearts and souls to provide for those who can give little back, and what they can give back is an endless flow of love. Robin Mahfood told us when we left for Haiti that we were to look into the people’s eyes very carefully and we would see Jesus. There is no place in Haiti where this is truer than at the Little Children of Jesus (Handicapped Children’s Home).

The boys’ and girls orphanages are important for they are there to give love. They also teach the boys and girls how to fit into society as they grow older, but most of those children in the Little Children of Jesus (Handicapped Children’s Home) will never be able to go back into society. The sad part is, that as the violence and political instability continues pilgrimages will deteriorate and less people will be able to visit Haiti and see first hand what beautiful and proud people the Haitians really are. As the instability continues, so will the greater need for people to support those who are seen as having less worth.

When I was in Haiti the first time, and was in our hotel in the hills I would mentally point my finger at those people who lived in large homes in the hills who had money and was not helping those starving in the village below. While on the plane from Haiti to Florida I asked God why he sent me to see such deplorable conditions? He then spoke to me and reminded me of the parable of the Good Samaritan, reminded me that they were my neighbors also and asked me, what I was going to do about it?
