Help Build 25 homes in Haiti

Inspired by a recent visit to Food For The Poor, Rachel Wheeler, 9, plans to build 25 homes in Haiti. Rachel joined members of Lighthouse Point’s Chamber of Commerce for a tour of Food For The Poor headquarters in Coconut Creek. Rachel listened carefully and asked a lot of questions during the presentation by Robin Mahfood, President and CEO of Food For The Poor.

Rachel, a third-grade student at Zion Lutheran Christian School in Deerfield Beach, wanted to do something to support Food For The Poor’s quest to help the unsheltered. So, she’s spearheading an initiative to build 25 homes. Her plan is to approach people and business owners, asking them to participate and donate $200 to Food For The Poor. A donation of $2,600 can provide a destitute family with a basic, safe and secure home.

The dire housing needs in Haiti were compounded by the grueling 2008 hurricane season. Housing has been a top priority for Food For The Poor since its inception, with more than 55,000 housing units given to the poor. By providing simple, sturdy homes to the poorest of the poor, the charity can change the lives of entire families by giving them the security of a safe, dry place to live.

As a retired third grade teacher, I can tell you that third graders CAN change the world. They are so full of optimism and are not afraid to try big things to make a difference in the world. You go, Rachel, and I'm right behind you!

In these times of great problems one of the few ways we can tell God we love him is by sharing the gifts that he has given us with others. Thanks and God Bless

If more parents raised more children to be less "me me" and more for sharing by their own parental example, we would not have such an unbalance of resources. Bravo mom, Bravo Rachel!!!!!!!

God bless your parents and the people around you for supporting you in this effort. More parents should instill such sense of altruism in their children at such an early age.

Hello Rachel,
It is always nice to hear that others work hard to live out their faith by responding to the poor. Some look at the poor as a burden. Others, like you, see the opportunities to help the poor as a Blessing. Jesus gave us the poor so we can respond to Him through them. God Bless you and your family for what you do.

My wife and I have a goal to build a house every year and support one child living in poverty for each member of our home. You are a real inspiration to the rest of us!

Keep up the good work.

Your Friends in Christ.

Rachel, it has been just one month since your put your dream into motion. You have gone from the dream of building 13 homes - now a reality, to the dream and goal of building a village. Though the saying is: " it takes a village to raise a child", you are proving that a child can raise the consciousness of many to build a village.
I am so very proud of you and will be there in the sidelines cheering you on! Michele
